About Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve (PHBR)
Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve (PHBR) is the the latest UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve on Penang Island. Spanning across approximately 12,482 hectares, this reserve encompasses the Penang Hill Rainforest and various other wooded regions on the island. Here, you will encounter a remarkable array of plant and animal species, making it a vital hub for preserving biodiversity. The reserve harbours diverse flora and fauna, playing a crucial role in biodiversity conservation.
Each of the world’s Biosphere Reserves is a distinctive social and natural landscape, and part of the collective heritage of humanity. “A Tale of Two Hills “ is a creative endeavour to curate and narrate some of the stories of Penang Hill. The work documents and acknowledges the diverse and rich experiences of people making their lives alongside nature on our glorious and sometimes challenging rainforest-clad hills. In exploring the connections between people and nature over generations, this exhibition is a testimony to the ingenuity and resilience of both human society and nature. It is also a demonstration that in this journey our fates remain intertwined as in time immemorial.
