About our Funders
The Habitat Foundation
The Habitat Foundation is a charitable trust based in Penang, Malaysia and the non-profit sister organization of The Habitat Penang Hill. The two organizations complement each other in the overall mission to connect people to this ancient rainforest, promote biodiversity conservation, and support impactful solutions through the programmatic work of the Foundation.
The Habitat Foundation is committed to supporting the conservation of biodiversity and safeguarding the living environment upon which we all depend. We are proud to support the government’s nomination of the Penang Hill as a Biosphere Reserve under the UNESCO Man & the Biosphere Programme and are committed to establishing Penang Hill as an important centre for rainforest research and sustainability studies.
The Foundation helps fund strategic conservation and research initiatives both within and beyond Penang. Find out more about our Grants programme here.
The Foundation works closely with communities, scientists, academic institutions, NGOs, government agencies, protected area managers, and businesses. Our aim is to protect the irreplaceable natural heritage of this region and shift our society towards sustainability.

A Message From our Funders

Malaysia’s hill stations are rich with wonderful stories largely untold. For some lucky ones Bukit Larut and Penang Hill evoke memories of wild places and charmed childhoods surrounded by nature. We know that the two hills have histories that stretch far back over past generations and into very different times. They carry with them stories of change and a hopeful nation of diverse cultures coming into being. A Tale of Two Hills is a first step towards capturing a little of the magic of our hills and our collective heritage. We are excited to be part of this journey of discovery led by local visual storytellers who are bringing to life the voices of local people and the living landscape of these two iconic peaks which are an essential part of the story of the Malay Peninsula.
JUSTINE VAZ
Executive Director | The Habitat Foundation
We are truly delighted to jointly collaborate with The Habitat Foundation on A Tale of Two Hills, which is a community-based initiative to document images and historical/community stories surrounding Penang Hill and Maxwell Hill.
This is made possible by the Cultural Economy Catalytic Grant Programme that aims to leverage Malaysia’s archaeological heritage as enablers for re-generative socio-economic growth and development of community’s cultural, economic, and social capital to create employment and investment opportunities, in line with the objectives of the Northern Region Archaeotourism Network & Local Economic Development programme, a Think City initiative, under the auspices of the Ministry of Finance.
Congratulations to the project coordinator, mentors, and participants on shining a spotlight on the importance of local perspective in cultural heritage curation in both visual and narrative forms. We hope that the journey of putting this together has provided an opportunity to better understand and increase appreciation for these hills and its surroundings, as it has done for us.
